    Quinn

This Card-Review article was written by Sean O'Reilly and was published first on "Decipher's Website (decipher.com)" at May 13th, 2001.

His name is Quinn and he was a member of the Q-Continuum. Quinn asked Kathryn Janewayimage for asylum aboard Voyager so he could end his existance. He was tired of being immortal after billions of years. After some debate, the captain decided to help Quinn and thus the Q Civil War began (but that's another story...).

Quinn is similar to the well-know "troika" cards from the Premiere edition: Amanda Rogersimage, Q2image, and Kevin Uxbridgeimage. He is able to nullify any just played or revealed interrupt or event - including treaties (something a Kevin Uxbridge can't do!). And like Q2, he can nullify either an Amanda Rogers or Kevin Uxbridge just played and like Amanda he can nullify a Q2 just played. But you must treat Quinn like a "troika" card in regards to nullification - he can't nullify any cards which are immune to either Kevin or Amanda.

The game designers put some fair limitations on the card to make it balanced. You can only use Quinn thrice per game which in laymen's terms means he can be played just three times a game before he ends his existence (and can't be played by you anymore). Plus, each time you play a Quinn you'll lose 5 points. Since the card has the point box, after it has its effect, it will go to your point box area... this will keep you from retrieving the card from your discard pile with a Palor Toff - Alien Traderimage. On the flip side, neither Oof!image nor The Line Must Be Drawn Hereimage mention Quinn, so you're guaranteed you'll never lose more than 5 points when you play him.

In a Voyager-only environment you'll find that Quinn is extremely useful. There are many excellent deck-manipulating or personnel-killing cards you want to nullify, such as: Villagers With Torchesimage, Ancestral Visionimage, Kal-Tohimage, Beyond The Subatomicimage, The Giftimage, Mutationimage, Nanoprobe Resuscitationimage, The Phageimage, or The Powerimage. And of course, you can always nullify a Quinn with another Quinn (no Delta Quadrant Spatial Scissionimage needed).

    Combos:

    • Quinn x3 + playing Borg + Handshakeimage: A Borg player won't lose the 5 points since they're bonus points which are irrelevant to the Borg; and with Handshake, you can make sure your probe card isn't a Quinn.
    • Quinn x3 + The Line Must Be Drawn Hereimage x3 + Q the Refereeimage + Oof!: Your Amanda-happy opponent will lose 20 points when they nullify your Quinn. Ouch!
    • Opponent's seeded Hidden Agenda Treaty + Quinn + Fire Sculptorimage: When your opponent reveals their Treaty... nullify it and then put it out-of-play.
    • Quinn x3 + opponent's Q-Flashimage: Nullify these commonly used Q-Icon cards without being Oof-ed: Penalty Boximage, Frigidimage, Scottish Settler, and Door-Netimage.
