Bluegill InfestationSeeds on table; place up to seven unique personnel face up beneath here from outside the game. Your copies of those personnel in play are STRENGTH +5, considered Bluegills, and may not be stunned. Also, when one of your Bluegills is killed, you must randomly select a personnel from here; if it matches one who was killed, that personnel was considered to be the Bluegill Queen. (Unique.) This Card-Review article was written by openCards user Dukat at Jan 7th, 2009.
Introduction:
In 1998 the third expansion set for our beloved game entered the market. It contained a card named "Alas, Poor Queen". That card refered to something called "Bluegill Queen". Many people asked what that Bluegill Queen was or would be someday.
Expansion after expansion came out and the mysterious Bluegill Queen was forgotten.
Many years later, the last real First Edition set, All Good Things, invited us to go where no player had gone before. Part of that set was a card called "Bluegill Infestation". When I first saw it, I was wondering what that card would really do. Nowadays I think that Decipher itself forgot what their intention was when they first invented "Alas, Poor Queen" and its gaming mechanism.
I put away this card until I realised that it is more useful than one might think after the first glimse since it secures and enhanced a series of well-known game strategies and decks.
The card itself:
Bluegill Infestation is considered to be seeded with up to seven unique personnel cards beneath it. Each copy of one of those personnel in play gains Strength +5 and cannot be stunned.
Since no one uses Alas, Poor Queen anymore, I will leave out the rest of the card text due to insignificance.
Strategies:
Up to seven unique personnel get Strength +5 and cannot be stunned. By that a player can guarantee the safety of important personnel cards.
In the following, I will describe some special cases where it is very useful to use Bluegill Infestation to enhance well-selected personnel's attributes.
- Khan Decks
By enhancing the attributes of Khan and Joachim, it is guaranteed that they will neither be killed nor stunned for capturing.
- Decks with Ba'ku
Ba'ku report on their planet for free. That makes them vulnerable to Jem'Hadar shrouding or any other personnel battle. Due to their relatively bad Strength, those free plays might end up dead.
There are four Ba'ku. By placing a copy of them beneath Bluegill Infestation they are guaranteed to survive a battle during the first one or two turns.
- Dominion Decks
Playing Jem'Hadar normally does not require additional enhancements since Jem'Hadar already have good printed attributes.
When using Vorta the situation changes a little bit.
In order to ensure the security of the Vortas (due to their relatively low strength) and to make them able to participate in personnel battle as adequate fighters, a copy of all important Vorta being used in the deck (there are not that many) should be placed under Bluegill Infestation to do so. Using Clone Machine in addition to that makes the Vorta nearly immortal.
As I think, these decks are the most common cases for using Bluegill Infestation. Of course, any important personnel with low strength printed can be protected from getting killed in personnel battle or by dilemmas without using any equipment and most importantly, from the first turn on.
