Tim Claypoole - Day 3 Worlds (10th seed)
1-2 vs. Barry Windschitl, eliminated in Round 1
Tim managed a 5-3 showing in Day 2 with only one modified win, avoiding a tiebreaker showdown with his 17 victory points. He abandoned his Starfleet deck for another pile more similar to the one with which James Hoskin had cleaned up the Day 2 field: a Voyager speed solver, using the initial points from Caretaker's to fuel At What Cost? and then racing towards a quick four-mission win while abusing Chakotay's mass-unstopping ability (which has since been reined in).
Against the less-experienced Barry Windschitl, Tim seemed to be the favorite despite having the lower seed. Tim was confident in the deck's ability to rebound as James had proved in his 7-1 run of Day 2. Tim's dilemma pile was armed to handle Borg; with a minimal complement of multiple dilemmas, and all the 1-cost guaranteed stoppers in planet and space, Tim's pile was loaded with enough stops to give his Voyager crew a fighting chance.
Barry shocked most players when he showed up with a Cardassian solver, using the Crafty Underling Garak to dodge most skill dilemmas, Mila to knock out problem interrupts like Cluttering Irrelevancies, and the Prefect of Bajor Dukat to unstop key personnel in mission attempts. Tim almost won the match, but a fortunate dilemma draw for Barry sent Tim home early.
