    Molecular Mishap

This Card-Review article was written by Will Hawkins and was published first on "Decipher's Website (decipher.com)" at Jan 27th, 2006.

In a game where points determine the winner, you want to be in complete control when you spend them. Imagine if your opponent could suddenly take points away from you. Would that put a damper on your use of At What Cost?image Well, your dreams – or nightmares – have become reality because that day has come; now there is yet another way to lose 5 points from a dilemma.

For two-cost and three dilemmas consumed (ouch), your opponent can relieve you of five of your hard-earned points using the dual Molecular Mishap, presuming you don't meet its requirements. Now while the first set is not so hard to come by, Anthropology, Biology and Cunning > 28, the second set is trickier: Law, Officer, and Strength > 32. The Law, especially, might be difficult to command using some affiliations, like the Borg.

Even if you don't think the requirements are very imposing, don't let that dissuade you from adding this dilemma to your pile. There are plenty of ways to make those requirements more difficult. You can create a skill-filter dilemma pile using cards like Secret Identityimage, Kelvan Show of Forceimage, and The Demands of Dutyimage to take out the personnel with a skill you are targeting. On the deck side, you can use an affiliation like the Borg to remove specific personnel with Abductionimage. The Maquis are great at that type of maneuver, too, with cards like Retaliationimage and Organized Terrorist Activitiesimage at their disposal. Then you have the Romulans' Far-Seeing Eyesimage that allow you to take-out those personnel before they even see play.

An article of this nature would not be complete without mentioning the almost never-seen Vastly Outnumberedimage, and Damaged Reputationimage. The reason they are rarely played is that they are very easy dilemmas to pass. With three different sets of requirements, sometimes it is hard to find a deck that does not scoot past them. If you want the point loss to hit, you have to put them as the first dilemma faced. Also, they are specific to planet or space making them less versatile. However, if you pair them with Molecular Mishap you may find your opponent losing more points than either of you expected.

Live Long, Prosper, and cause some Mishaps.
